Coronary Heart Bypass Surgery

If you have disorders with blood flow in heart arteries, it may signify that you need a coronary heart bypass surgery. This procedure helps to avoid heart attacks and other life-threatening conditions. Why trusting your health to Bonifatius Hospital? How we perform such surgery? This article will answer these and many other questions.

What is coronary bypass surgery?

This is a surgical procedure that changes blood flow: instead of getting into the section of a blocked or partially obstructed artery, it will flow into a healthy vessel. The surgeon makes a new pathway to the heart, and blood flow normalizes.

Types of surgery

The kind of surgery depends on the number of blocked vessels, and it can be single bypass (1 artery is blocked), double bypass (2 blocked), triple or quadruple bypass. The number or blocked arteries is very important: the more is obstructed, the higher is the risk of heart failure or other cardiac problems. Besides, the duration of surgery depends on how many arteries are blocked.

If you’ve been prescribed a heart bypass operation, the doctor will give certain instructions on how to prepare for it. If this is not an emergency case, the doctor will check your family history and assign several tests, for instance, blood analysis, X-ray of the chest, electrocardiogram and angiogram.

How is it performed?

Before the surgery, a patient is given general anesthesia to fall asleep and not to experience pain. After that, the following steps are performed:

  • The surgeon makes a cut in the middle of chest and pulls rib cage apart to access the heart. The doctor may also opt for laparoscopy (minimal invasive surgery) that requires making smaller cuts and using tiny instruments and a camera.
  • A cardiopulmonary bypass machine is used to make oxygenated blood circulate through the body during the operation. Some modern procedures don’t require connection to the heart-lung machine.
  • If a long heart operation is to be performed, a surgeon will apply “extreme cooling” technique. In lower temperature, body needs less oxygen, and heart will be cooled with cold salty water. Such technique allows performing an long operation that lasts several hours and decreases the chance of heart or brain damage because of the lack of oxygen.
  • A healthy vessel is taken from person’s leg or chest wall to replace the ruptures artery. The material is also called a coronary heart bypass graft. The choice of graft depends on the blocked artery. For example, left arteries are replaced with vessels from the chest, and right arteries are usually replaced with vessels from a leg or forearm. The graft is connected with healthy heart arteries. When the surgery is over, functioning of the bypass is checked. If everything works well, the cuts are stitched up and bandaged. The patient is taken to the intensive care unit for one day.

When the operation is done, such symptoms as pain in chest, shortness of breath and poor blood flow to heart gradually disappear. In some people, coronary heart bypass repair improves heart functions and prevents the risk of heart diseases resulting into death.

Side effects

Doctors in Bonifatius Hospital will do their best to ensure proper recovery after heart operation. However, heart bypass surgery still has some risks. Possible complications include severe bleeding, blood clotting, infection, kidney failure, pain in chest, light fever, arrhythmia, memory loss, and heart attacks.
