Gastroenterology & Diabetology Department

Gastroenterology (gastrointestinal medicine) is a very large sub-area of General Internal Medicine. It deals with the functions and disorders of the entire gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the anus including the liver and the pancreas. We deal with metabolic disorders, storage disorders, certain infectious diseases, acute and chronic hepatic infections, autoimmune diseases (e.g. Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), and organs-specific tumor diseases. Many symptoms and diseases of the abdomen, but also of the entire human organism, are diagnosed and treated in this area of internal medicine.

Here in Lingen we use a variety of diagnostic techniques and treatment options, which we would like to describe on these pages. These diagnostics and treatment options are available for both outpatient and inpatient care patents. Which form of care is required is decided individually in each case depending on the medical as well as the legal and administrative background.

Interdisciplinarity is of extreme importance to gastroenterological diseases, thats why we prioritize a good cooperation with all other departments of the Bonifatius Hospital, especially with our surgical colleagues in gastro-intestinal surgery (visceral surgery). Particularly noteworthy in this context is the good cooperation within the Certified Colon Cancer Center and the Obesity Center.

Other treatment foci of our department, which are contentwise and personnel related to the mentioned above, are the nutritional medicine, the therapy of obesity and the treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus. All our employees have a great expertise in this field of medicine, which – whether only in our department or within interdisciplinary strategies – improves the treatment of our patients.
