What is gastrointestinal cancer?

Sometimes normal cells mutate because of radiation, inheritance, or other factors. Instead of finishing lifecycle, they reproduce and form a tumor or a lump. When abnormal cells start growing in the intestine or stomach, the tumor obstructs way for bowel contents, and presses against intestine walls. It interferes with functions of intestine and spoils digestion.

Quite often, people mistake gastroesophageal cancer symptoms for less serious diseases and conditions. The signs of cancer include:

  • Change of bowel habit: defecation may occur either too often, or rarely.
  • A person may have stools of smaller caliber. Theoretically, it means that intestine is obstructed by a tumor.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Fatigue.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Blood in stool.

Unfortunately, most symptoms reveal when cancer develops to the stage 2 or 3, this is why it is important to have the disease diagnosed regularly. If you have any risk factors, it is crucial to go through screening once-twice a year.

When surgery is required?

As a rule, gastrooesophageal cancer surgery is assigned in cases when tumor has become too large to be simply treated by chemo and radiation. Usually, at the second stage, operation is already required to get rid of cancer and stop its growth. Without surgery, cancer cannot be cured with only chemo and radiation: a doctor needs to see how far the tumor spread, and whether it affected adjacent tissues and organs.

Types of surgery

In Bonifatius hospital, we perform two basic types of GI cancer surgery:

  • Open. A surgeon makes one big cut in the abdomen to access the affected area of stomach or intestine. Tumors, lumps and neighboring tissues are removed, and a piece of tissue is taken as a sample for biopsy.
  • Minimal-invasive. This surgery is also called “video assisted”, because surgeons use a tube with a small camera on its end. They make 2-4 small incisions in abdomen: one is used to insert the camera, and other – to operate with instruments. With the help of the camera that transmits real-time video of surgery inside the abdomen, a surgeon can accurately use instruments and observe the affected area.

The second type of surgery is considered to be preferable these days, because it causes less pain, reduces recovery period, and leaves fewer scars. However, such procedure should be performed by a very skilled surgeon, because it should be performed highly accurately. Besides, hospitalization period after minimal-invasive surgery lasts for 3-4 days, while traditional surgery requires about a week of hospitalization.
