Scoliosis Spine Surgery

Scoliosis is a condition that requires responsible approach and a lot of effort to be fixed. If it becomes too serious and gets worse, scoliosis spine surgery is the only way out. Why trusting your health to Bonifatius hospital, and what we do for our patients? This article will answer all your questions.

What is scoliosis surgery?

Traditional or laser spine surgery for scoliosis is used to fix spine curvature and relieve symptoms. First, the surgery stops development of the curvature, if deformation continues to worsen. Secondly, depending on the spine flexibility, the doctor can turn the abnormal spinal twisting and correct the curve by 50-70%. Thanks to these changes, a person will be able to stand straight and have the rib hump reduced. Thirdly, the operation helps to sustain trunk balance. When fixing spine position, the surgeon will consider the overall trunk balance and try to make normal curvature while keeping hips and legs even. Besides, the spinal cord is monitored during the surgery to maintain or restore its health.

Symptoms of scoliosis

At initial stages, scoliosis is hard to notice: it has no symptoms, and alters the spine slightly. While the curve progresses, some of signs can become obvious. Usually the symptoms can be noticed by other people who note that:

  • A person has clothes hanging unevenly or fitting strangely.
  • The sideways curvature is noticed when a person is changing clothes or wears a bathing suit, or is being at the beach or pool.

Even if asymmetry seems to me minor, it’s still a reason to visit a doctor and check the back, because scoliosis is easier to cure at early stages.

Types of scoliosis surgery

Today, there are two main approaches to spine surgery, and both are practiced in Bonifatius hospital. During the traditional, open operation, the surgeon will make a big cut on the spine to access the bones and tissues. With minimally invasive spine surgery for scoliosis, smaller incisions are required, and recovery period is much shorter. Besides, the risk of infection and bleeding is also lower. This approach is considered to be the modern standard of surgery in majority of medical centers.

Laser spine surgery for scoliosis is also practiced in Bonifatius hospital, but this approach does not have many advantages over usual surgery. This kind of operation is used for some certain manipulations only.

How is it performed?

As a rule, scoliosis is fixed with the help of spinal fusion which requires attachment of rods, wires and hooks to the curved part in order to straighten it. Tiny fragments of bone are put over the spine and later these pieces grow together with the spinal bone improving its position. This is the most common type of spine operation done, and usually requires several hours.

Scoliosis can be treated with different types of instruments, and techniques vary according to the type of rods and hooks used. The spine can be accessed either from the back, or the front of the body (abdomen). Most often the posterior approach is used: the spine is accessed from the back to be stabilized and straightened. The choice of method depends on person’s age, spinal flexibility and location of the curve.

Side effects

As any other surgery, scoliosis operation can have some risks and negative outcomes. First and foremost, these can include infection, lung problems and neurological problems. A surgery for adults can be more risky than for children and teens, and may cause blood clotting, infection and allergy to medications. Early complications can be lazy bowel (temporary dysfunction of bowel), collapse of lung that can be prevented by deep breathing and coughing, and infections of deep wounds.Other serious complications can be back pain, inability to stand straight, back fatigue, and failure of fusion.
